Pick It Up
If any want to be followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. – Luke 9:23
Ordinarily, we think of the cross as a large burden we must carry. Sometimes the “crosses” in our lives are indeed heavy: the loss of a loved one, a big disappointment or illness. But not all crosses are so large: you sometimes stub your toe, lose a coin or get a bad grade.
Here’s something different. You see a piece of paper lying right next to the waste paper basket. Maybe you didn’t drop it there, but you can pick it up. In a small way, your willingness to pick up someone else’s mistake is a sign of love for them. It is also a sign of love for other people who also have to pick up trash everyday, for the world and for the Creator. It may be a small cross, but it makes a difference.
